  • Cut 6 – 3 ¼” x WOF strips
    • Sub-cut 72 – 3 ¼” squares; cut each square once on the diagonal

Fabric G:

  • Cut 19 – 3 ¼” x WOF strips
    • Sub-cut 72 – 3 ¼” squares; cut each square once on the diagonal
    • Sub-cut 170 – 3 ¼” squares; cut each square once on the diagonal (set the left overs aside)

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

** Step 2 4 patch unit should measure 3.5 x 3.5. I found this to be too big and when I went to square up my next unit, I was loosing my points. I squared up my 4 patch to 3 1/4 x 3 1/4. The finished size of your square in a square should measure 4 1/2 x 4 1/2.

The first sample is the block with the original size, after it would be sewn in. Note how you loose your nice points. The second block is with the 4patch trimmed. Looks much nicer!

  1. Take 70 4-Patch Units from step 2. Sew a Fabric F triangle on the top and right edges (next to fabric B) of the 4-Patch Unit, lining up the long edge of the triangle with the edges of the 4-Patch and centering the triangle point to the center seam of the 4-patch. Press triangles out after each is added.
  2. Sew a Fabric G triangle on the bottom and left edges of the 4-Patch Unit in the same manner to complete the Square-in-a-Square 4-Patch Unit A. Trim unit to 4 ½” x 4 ½”.
  1. Take the other 70 4-Patch Units. Sew a Fabric G triangle on all 4 edges of the 4-Patch Unit.
