Machine Quilting

Our Friends at TrendTex Fabrics posted these great tips for machine quilting!

It’s tip time!

Are you limited by your small sewing machine, but don’t have the space or the funds for a new one?

Good news! We’ve got some sneaky tips for you:

1) Try quilt-as-you-go
Quilt blocks or rows by creating quilt sandwiches. While avoiding quilting too close to the edges, sew the front-right sides together, using sashing on the reverse to hide the raw edges. You can also make the backing larger so you can fold it over and finish without sashing, like in this video from American Patchwork and Quilting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gauFew1yrFo

2) Work from the centre out
The centre of the quilt is always the hardest to sew. Make life easier for yourself and start there, working outward. Some quilters swear by rolling their fabric up to fit it under the machine arm. Others prefer to squish it up and let the excess drape onto supporting tables that take the weight and prevent dragging.

3) Rent a larger machine
Your local sewing store may have sit down mid-arm machines that you can rent by the hour. This could be the perfect opportunity to take a class and rent a long-arm!
