I used 2 packs of printed charms and 2 packs of background charms (you can use 1 printed layer cake and 1 background layer cake). Inner border and outer border.

Using 1 printed and 1 background make half square triangles. Draw a diagonal line down the center and sew a 1/4 inch on both sides. Keep your matching prints together. You need 4 half square triangles of the same fabric (if using a layer cake then follow Missouri Star’s instructions)
Create an hourglass with a set of triangles

Using a rotating matt or small matt to turn. Cut your hourglass blocks into 3 equal sections. My blocks measured 8.5″ square, so in thirds it would be just shy of 2 7/8th.
Rotate your block around until you start with a background square in the upper left hand corner, this makes the next part easier to follow.
Swap block 1 and block 3
Swap block 7 and block 9

Rotate the center block 5 – quarter turn
rotate block 4 – full turn
rotate block 6 – full turn

Sew block together

Finished top (don’t mind the puppy paws!)
