Fall Mystery 2022 – Step 1

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Fabric 1 background:

  • Cut (2) 4-3/4” x 4-3/4” squares. Sub-cut each once diagonally into (4) Half-square triangles (HST).
  • Cut (4) 4-1/4” x 8” rectangles.
  • Cut (4) 2-3/8” x 2-3/8” squares.
  • Cut (4) 2-3/8” x 4-1/4” rectangles.

    Fabric 2 Contrast:
  • Cut (2) 4-3/4” x 4-3/4” squares. Sub-cut each once diagonally into (4) Half-square triangles (HST).
  • Cut (8) 4-1/4” x 4-1/4” squares.

    Fabric 3 Dark:
  • Cut (8) 2-3/8” x 2-3/8” squares.

    Fabric 4 Small Print:
  • Cut (1) 4-1/4” x 4-1/4” square.

PIECING INSTRUCTIONS:

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 2-3/8” Fabric 3 squares. Place a square right sides together to a 2-3/8” x 4-1/4” Fabric 1 rectangle as shown. Sew on drawn line and trim seam to 1/4”. Press to Fabric 3.

Repeat step 1 on the other side of the rectangle. Make (4) FG units. Units should equal 2-3/8” x 4-1/4”.

Layout the (4) FG units, (4) 2-3/8” Fabric
1 squares, and (1) 4-1/4” Fabric 4 square as shown. Sew patches across. Sew rows together. Press in the direction of the arrows. Section should equal 8” square.

Make (4) FG units with the 4-1/4” Fabric 2 squares and 4-1/4” x 8” Fabric 1 rectangles.
Sections should equal 4-1/4” x 8”.

Sew a 4-3/4” Fabric 1 HST to a 4-3/4” Fabric 2 HST. Trim to equal 4-1/4” square. Press to Fabric 2. Make (4) HST units.

Layout the (4) FG units, (4) HST units and the center section from steps 1-3 as shown. Sew patches across. Sew rows together. Press in the direction of the arrows. Unit should equal 15-1/2” square.
